The Manchester Tiles Letter L – Lowry

£35.00

This Lowry Manchester tile is our homage to arguably Manchester’s most famous artist, Laurence Stephen Lowry who lived and worked in and around Salford for 40 years. Like his home and his paintings, Lowry was an enigmatic figure. We’ve always been captivated by his brooding paintings of northern industrial districts and the people inside them, often referred to as ‘matchstick people’, albeit ones brimming with deeply relatable endeavour.

Here we’ve chosen to depict the great man himself at his easel. Lowry has become an icon for the region, and a hotel in Manchester and theatre and gallery complex in Salford Quays have both taken his name. The distinctive elegant half cylinder shape of the theatre is featured on Lowry’s canvas here, along with Ann, his amalgamation of muses and the subject of a painting he completed in 1957.

Each L Tile is designed here in Manchester then hand-rolled and glazed in the UK’s ceramic heartland Stoke-on-Trent, before returning for artwork firing in local Manchester kilns. A fitting end for a quintessentially Mancunian statement.
