Christmas time is the celebration of coming together and giving, and the Christmas Stocking tradition is central in this. Leaving out a stocking to be filled with treats has ancient roots in European culture.
Today the practice has evolved into the ceremony of Father Christmas coming into homes while the children sleep and to be greeted by parents who offer him a mince pie and a glass of sherry: and, of course, compulsory carrots for the reindeer.
Larger more important presents are now usually left under the Christmas tree while the stocking is filled with different small gifts, chocolate and toffee treats, and very often a fruit, say a tangerine, wrapped in silver foil. Appropriately these small inexpensive gifts are now referred to as stocking “fillers” of “stuffers”.
