The Manchester Tiles Letter B – Boddingtons

This Manchester ceramic tile pays tribute to one of the city’s most beloved breweries. When Henry Boddington bought out Strangeways Brewery in 1853, he made it very much his own – turning the brewery into a Mancunian treasure. As well as producing some of the UK’s best loved bitter, it also produced some of its best loved adverts, in which creamy pints of Boddies were portrayed as ice creams under the tagline The Cream of Manchester.

Here we’ve chosen one in particular – our favourite of their TV ads. The Boddingtons B is nestled against the ice cream swirl, with Melanie Sykes’ lipstick – smeared as she gondolas away with her stolen pint – at the bottom. Like us, Boddingtons love bees, so it wouldn’t have finished without one.

Each Manchester ceramic tile is designed in Manchester, hand-rolled and glazed in the UK’s ceramic heartland of Stoke-on-Trent, before returning north for local firing. The result is a finely crafted ceramic tile that feels both rooted and modern — a distinctive decorative piece celebrating Manchester’s identity.
