Where do you start with Factory Records? This Factory Records tile captures the story of arguably the greatest indie label of all time, founded in 1979 by local TV personality and post-punk connoisseur Tony Wilson and launching the careers of Happy Mondays and Joy Division, which went on to become New Order after Ian Curtis’ suicide.
Whilst philosophically and musically it was ground-breaking, Factory’s finances were a different story (something that can happen when you sign your original contracts with your own blood). If you want to know more, the legend was captured brilliantly in Michael Winterbottom’s film 24 Hour Party People – almost as brilliantly as our Factory Records tile which incorporates all the iconic ingredients, from Peter Saville’s and Central Station Design’s cover designs to the Use Hearing Protection symbol.
Each F Tile is designed here in Manchester then hand-rolled in the UK’s ceramic heartland Stoke-on-Trent, before returning for firing in local kilns. A fitting end for a quintessentially Mancunian statement.
