Our suffragettes Manchester tile – Letter S – celebrates the suffragettes and the struggle of women to have the same voting rights as men in Parliamentary elections. Manchester has a long history of political radicalism and the struggle for gender equality was always a dominant feature. The Manchester Society for Women’s Suffrage was established in 1867 by Lydia Becker, however it was the Pankhursts – Emmeline and her daughter Christabel – who most capture the spirit of the movement in the popular mind’s eye.
Emmeline Pankhurst’s militancy – Deeds not Words, depicted in our tile design – did finally lead to men and women voting alongside each other in Parliamentary elections. Today her life is remembered by a bronze sculpture in St. Peter’s Square.
Each suffragettes Manchester tile is designed here in Manchester, then handrolled and glazed in the UK’s ceramic heartland Stoke-on-Trent, before returning for artwork firing in local kilns. A fitting end for a quintessentially Mancunian statement.
