The University of Manchester Bicentenary Tile

Celebrate the University of Manchester’s 200th birthday with this official bicentenary ceramic tile. Two centuries of world-class education, research, and pioneering alumni are brought to life in a design partnership between The Sculpts and the University of Manchester.

This stunning pen and ink illustration features some of the University’s most illustrious alumni and staff, iconic architecture, and several of its most important innovations and discoveries.

Immortalised here, you’ll find: Christabel Pankhurst DBE, suffragette and alumna; Alan Turing OBE, mathematician and computer scientist; Sir Arthur Lewis, economist and Nobel Laureate; components of the Manchester Baby, the first electronic stored-program computer; botanical illustrations from the Manchester Museum Herbarium Archives; the Sackville Street Building, the home of Manchester Technology College and UMIST; the atomic structure of Graphene; the Lovell telescope; early medical instruments; and the ‘Manchester Bee’.
