What Makes a Manchester Tile?

Let’s be clear about what we mean by ‘Manchester tile’, because when people search for that phrase they’re often looking for bathroom fitters or discount tile warehouses. We’re neither. Our Manchester Tiles are 6×6 inch decorative ceramic tiles, each one featuring an original pen and ink illustration that tells a specific chapter of Manchester’s history, culture, or identity. They’re handmade, they come in their own gift box, and they’re designed to be displayed — on a shelf, a mantelpiece, a kitchen wall, or mounted and framed.

The idea grew out of lockdown in 2020. Richard, who works as an architect and illustrator, had been drawing Manchester buildings and landmarks for years. When the world stopped, those drawings became something more focused — a deliberate attempt to capture the things that make this city what it is. The first tiles were fired by a company in Stoke, and Richard and Jade took them to a market in Ancoats to see if anyone was interested. The reception was overwhelming. People didn’t just buy tiles; they stood and talked about the stories behind each letter, shared their own connections, argued about which one they loved most.

That response told us we’d tapped into something real. Manchester is a city that knows its own story, and people wanted a way to hold a piece of it. Six years on, we now have our own kilns for firing the designs, a shop in Sale, stockists in some of Manchester’s finest cultural institutions, and a tile range that covers all of the alphabet. The base tiles are still hand-rolled in Stoke using traditional methods — each one has a slightly different weight and texture, which is exactly the point. These aren’t factory floor tiles. They’re small works of art.

The A to Z Series — A Letter for Every Story

Each letter in the series represents something specific about Manchester, chosen not for tourist-board appeal but because it genuinely matters to the city’s identity. A is for Affleck’s Palace — the ramshackle indoor market that’s been the beating heart of Manchester’s alternative scene since the 1980s. C is for Cotton — the industry that made Manchester rich, that filled its warehouses and canals and transformed a market town into the world’s first industrial city. H is for The Haçienda — the club that changed music and nightlife forever, a Factory Records experiment that burned bright and brief and left an indelible mark.

S is for Suffragettes — because the fight for women’s suffrage was born in Manchester, in the Free Trade Hall and in the front room of the Pankhurst house on Nelson Street. N is for the Northern Quarter — the creative quarter that rose from dereliction to become one of the most vibrant neighbourhoods in the country. M is for Manchester itself. L is for Lowry. R is for Rocket — Stephenson’s engine that launched the railway age from Liverpool Road Station. G is for Graphene — isolated at the University of Manchester, the material that won a Nobel Prize and may yet change the world.

The beauty of the series is that it gives people a way in. Some customers choose the letter that matches their name, their street, or their postcode. Others pick the subject that resonates most — music fans gravitate to H and F (Factory Records), scientists to G, historians to S. As one reviewer put it, people ‘love them all, and then have to decide’. That’s the dilemma, and it’s a good one.

From Sketch to Kiln: How Our Tiles Are Made

Every tile starts as a drawing in pen and ink, building up layers of fine detail that reference the subject’s history and visual character. The Suffragettes tile doesn’t just show a sash and a placard — it layers in the architecture of the Free Trade Hall, fragments of campaign literature, and the faces of the women who changed the course of democracy. The Haçienda tile captures the geometry of Ben Kelly’s famous interior design alongside the musical energy of the era. Each illustration is a piece of research as much as it is a piece of art.

Once the drawing is finalised, the design is transferred onto a ceramic base. The base tiles are hand-rolled in Stoke-on-Trent using traditional methods — not pressed by machine, which means every tile has subtle variations in surface texture and weight. That handmade quality is deliberate and important to us. The design is then fired onto the tile in our own kilns here in Manchester, locking the illustration permanently into the ceramic surface. The finished tile is solid, weighty, and made to last.

Each tile comes in a branded presentation box, making it ready to give as a gift straight out of the packaging. Displaying & Collecting Manchester Tiles

Most of our customers start with one tile and come back for more. We hear it constantly — someone buys the M for a friend’s birthday, then wants the L for themselves, then spots the H and remembers a night at the Haçienda they’ll never forget. Before long they’re building a collection on their mantelpiece or planning a kitchen wall display.

The tiles stand up on their own on any flat surface — a shelf, a windowsill, a desk. They also look brilliant mounted on a wall, either individually or in a row. Some customers spell out names with them: MANCHESTER across a living room wall is a popular one, and we’ve had people use them to spell out family names, street names, and nicknames. We also create bespoke tiles for special occasions and cultural institutions. The Whitworth Art Gallery has an exclusive W tile. Manchester Museum commissioned a bespoke collection covering archaeology, Egyptology, and their famous T-Rex, Stan. In 2024, MTV asked us to create an exclusive tile design as a gift for more than 100 international artists performing at the Europe Music Awards at Co-op Live — featuring George Michael, Björk, a Lowry-style cityscape, and the MTV Union Jack logo. These commissions are some of our proudest work, and they show just how far the format can stretch.
