This Hallé Orchestra tile celebrates one of Manchester’s most treasured cultural institutions. The Hallé Orchestra has set the benchmark for Mancunian high culture since 1857. Founded by pianist and conductor Charles Hallé as a temporary project for the Manchester’s Art Treasures Exhibition, he turned it into a permanent project based initially in the Free Trade Hall with the firm belief that music should be for everyone.
It’s had lots of highs – like giving the first performance of Elgar’s Symphony No. 1, and some lows (dwindling to just 30 players in 1943) but in true Mancunian style it has always fought back. In 1996 it moved to its present home in Bridgewater Hall, and has been at the heart of Manchester’s recent regeneration with the opening of Hallé St Peter’s in Ancoats in 2013.
The O Tile is our tribute to that extraordinary musical and architectural heritage. Each one is designed here in Manchester then hand-rolled and glazed in the UK’s ceramic heartland Stoke-on-Trent, before returning for artwork firing in local kilns.
