Why the Manchester Worker Bee?

The worker bee has been part of Manchester’s identity since 1842, when seven bees were placed on the city’s coat of arms — flying over a globe to represent a city that traded with the world. It wasn’t a decorative flourish. It was a statement about what Manchester was: a place built by the labour and ingenuity of ordinary people, not by royal patronage or inherited wealth. The mills, the warehouses, the canals — all of it was the hive at work.

That symbol only deepened in meaning after the Arena attack in May 2017, when the bee became a spontaneous emblem of solidarity.
